Ain Shams University Pediatric Surgery Department
HistoryAin Shams Pediatric Surgery Department was initiated in the late 1960s by the work of Prof Bahnassy and Prof Draz as 2 pediatric surgical units in two general surgical departments. In 1995 the 2 units were merged into one Pediatric surgical unit and moved to the current place in the Pediatric Hospital that was changed into a department in 2012.
In 2011 we started the first program of M.D. degree of Pediatric Surgery in Egypt.
With the force of around 20 staff members and having two affiliated units in Ain Shams Specialized and Oboor University Hospitals in addition to the main unit at Demerdash hospital.
In the current set up, we are performing around 3500 operations per year , covering different fields of Pediatric Surgery as neonatal, gastrointestinal, urological, plastic, laparoscopic , endocrine and oncology surgeries. We are running a daily outpatient clinic schedule and specialised clinics of vascular malformations, fecal incontenence, plastic, urology and surgical nutrition.
The department is nationally famous for its management of corrosive esophageal strictures both by dilatation and colonic replacement with many published work internationally and nationality, also it’s one of the leaders in the region for laparoscopic surgery, pediatric liver transplantation program and recently bariatric adolescent surgeries.
We are looking in the future to expand our educational and training role for the local and regional pediatric surgical society, we are also working on establishing subspecialties in our department with an increase in bed capacity to serve the demanding community.
