Al-Azhar University Pediatric Surgery Department was established in 1970 by Prof. Ayman Tawfeek as a Subspecialty unite of general surgery department in Saied Gala University Hospital with the capacity of seven beds and one OR weekly, and two OPD Clinics.

Prof. Nabil El Mahallawy joined the unit in 1973 as the first Assistant lecturer of Pediatric Surgery.

In October 1977, Prof. Rafik Shalaby was assigned as the first pediatric surgery resident. From 1970 Prof. Ayman Tawfik was the head of the units till 1997. Prof. Nabil El Mahallawy. Prof. Radwan Shakra, Prof. A/W Elokby, Prof. Amin Abokifa, Prof. Magid Ismail has taken over head of the unit, and after a long and difficult struggle in 2016 the unite became an established department, Prof. Soliman M. Soliman was the 1st head of Pediatric Surgery Department.

The Degree Of MD in pediatric Surgery was first approved in 2015 the 1st MD pediatric Surgery Graduate was Dr. El Bahrawy and Dr. Daboos In 2016.

The capacity of the department was extended largely to include 30 beds In El Hussein and 50 beds In Bab El- Sharea university hospitals.

The department is running a daily OPD in both Hospitals about 30000 out patients cases / year, Accepting daily ER pediatric and Neonatal cases around 1500 cases /year, running 10 OR tables weekly operating about 4000 cases / year.

The Staff members reached to a 17 Professors, 6 Assistant Professors, 8 Lecturers, 8 Assistant lecturers, and 10 Pediatric Surgery Residents.

Laparoscopic Surgery was first introduced by Prof. Ayman Tawfik who performed the first successful laparoscopic cholecystectomy in children in 1992, Prof. Nabil El Mahallawy in 1993 used the laparoscope in the diagnosis of impalpable undescended testis, Prof. Rafik Shalaby introduced laparoscopic management of impalpable testis, laparoscopic appendectomy in 1993 and since that time many staff members of the department are now continuing doing most advanced laparoscopic procedures (cholecystectomy, fundoplication, Hirschsprung`s disease, Sympathectomy, Anorectal Malformations, Splenectomy, Choledochal Cysts, Inguinal Hernias, Varicocelectomy, …)

The Scientific activities of the department is scheduled yearly ( Morbidity and mortality meeting, case presentations, Journal club meeting, Seminars, Symposiums, Workshops, Inter department meetings, EPSA day, and active participation in EPSA Congress).

All the staff members are contributing actively in the research activity of the department according to the proposals of the project study protocols approved by the department committee in the beginning of each year.

The main interest of the department is (general pediatric surgery, Neonatal surgery, GIT, urology, plastic surgery, oncology……..).

Some Staff members are interested in ( Fecal incontinence, Constipation, Hypospadiology, Bladder Extrophy Epispadias Syndrome, Cleft Palate, Hemangiomas and Vascular Tumors, Hepatobiliary Surgery, pediatric endoscopy).

The Prospect of the department in the near future focusing on initiation of a sub specialty units (Pediatric urology, Pediatric oncology and Pediatric plastic surgery).

Al Azhar University include three other separate Pediatric Surgery Units in addition to our department:
- Pediatric Surgical unit in Assuit Faculty of Medicine (Established in 1987)
- Pediatric Surgical unit in Damiatta Faculty of Medicine (established in 1999)
- Pediatric Surgical unit in Faculty of Medicine for girls AL-Zahraa Hospital (Established in 2001).

The newly developed hospital of AL-Azhar University in Nasr City will be opened very soon with total capacity of 1000 beds. The pediatric surgical unit will include pediatric surgical ICU , surgical unit for neonates, endoscopic and Laparoscopic unit with total capacity of 60 beds.
